LETTING GO

Learning to let things go is a process. Let's explore a few ways we can begin to develop this skill.

1) The Serenity Prayer

God grant me the serenity

To accept the things I cannot change

Courage to change the things I can

And wisdom to know the difference

Breaking this prayer down and doing exactly what it tells us is one of the best ways to develop the skill of letting go. Here we ask for some serenity first. Then we ask to accept what we cannot change. There are a ton of things we cannot change. So ask yourself... is this something I can change? If it is not the only thing you can change is how you are reacting. Find the acceptance. If it IS something you can change look for courage. And most importantly THE WISDOM TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE. Make sure you are clear about what you can and cannot change.

2) Mantras

Definition of mantra - a statement or slogan repeated frequently.

  • It's none of my business

  • I am only responsible for my own thoughts and actions

  • Everything will be exactly how it is supposed to be

  • I sincerely trust things will work out

Using phrases such as these repeatedly throughout the letting go process can help us when we find ourselves wanting to take hold of something again.

3) Breath

Surrender breath - take a deep breath in bringing the shoulders up the ears and hold for a moment. When you are ready let go with a big sigh dropping the shoulders down and releasing the tension. This physically helps us release that holding on in the body. Repeat a few times breathing deeply and slowly in between breaths. Affirm I AM LETTING GO with each slow exhalation.
